Each of these technologies allows a human community to solve collective action problems, tragedies of the commons, prisoner's dilemmas and other similar challenges without requiring rich peer to peer information or trust. Although there are many variants on Game A that have emerged on the fitness landscape of human history, generically, they all involve the movement of trust from human relationships to non-human entities.
The combination of these technologies has allowed Game A to scale to increasingly large and complex civilizations and to have generated a substantial increase in human wellbeing and capacity. However, the Game A toolkit has certain intrinsic limits that are becoming important as humanity is, for the first time, becoming a truly global community and is transitioning into the information economy.
We believe that these limits both require and enable a new civilization toolkit, which we call game~b, that is appropriate to the challenges and opportunities of the modern era.
